Nukemball with Room 6

On Friday, we got together with our buddy class, Room 6, and played Nukumball.
Nukemball is a bit like Volleyball, except you're allowed to catch the ball with your hands. If the ball drops on the ground and you are closest to it - you are out. It's a game of elimination.

The boys played against the girls. At one stage, only Aaliyah was left on the girls' team! She put up a good fight!

Thanks Room 6 for being such a fun buddy class this year. You have some awesome role models in your class.

Learning about Sound

Over the past few weeks, Room 3 children have been learning about SOUND for Science.
We've had fun learning about how sound reaches our ears, how sound travels, how different air vibrations cause different sounds, and how sound travels differently through different objects.

We've experimented creating various instruments to create a change in pitch.

Here are a few photos from our class...

Room 3 Camp

Last week we had our Room 3 overnight camp. On Friday we visited Potaka Station to get some 'hands on' farming experience. It was so much fun herding the sheep into pens, and picking up lambs to get them ready for docking. Although some of us slid in the mud and poo, it was all worth it!

On Friday, we travelled to the Manawatu Gorge to do the Tawa Loop Track. This is quite a new track that takes you up to the slip lookout. We were amazed how the hill has huge terraces cut into it to prevent erosion. We also got a fantastic view of the river below. Although it was an effort climbing uphill for 40 minutes, we all agreed it was worth it!

Staying overnight at school was lots of fun too. We loved playing team-building games in the hall, especially swiss ball tag. Who would have thought staying late at school could be so fun?

Friday Fun

Today Halcombe School had our first ... Milk Carton Folding Competition. Just for fun, we had a bit of a competition to see who are the fastest and best mild carton 'folderers'.

Holly, Seth and Fritha from our class competed against children from Room 2. The pressure was on, but our children kept their cool.

But in the end, there was a clear winner ...

Holly Thompson!!!!
Next, we all had a go at our house group Tug Of War competitions. Lots of fun!

Eating from our class garden...

Today we pulled out the celery that's been growing since last term.
After Aaliyah and Danielle kindly washed away the dirt and a (few slugs), we chopped it up, and chomped away. Some of us didn't like it, but nearly all of us tried it.

Most of us decided celery is pretty good. It goes particularly well with onion dip!
 MMmmmmmmmmm!

PET DAY

Today was Pet Day! The day started with some of the children heading out onto the field with their pets. We had lambs, calves, ponies, cats, dogs, goats and even a chook!

While the judges were busy checking out the animals, the rest of us went into the hall to create miniature rural scenes. We were joined by the other classes who were busy creating various artworks.

Pet Day was a lot of fun. There are lots of well looked-after and loved animals at Halcombe School.

Welcome back!

Welcome back to Room 3. I hope you all had a refreshing holiday. What a pity about the icky weather.

This term we have two new girls in our class. Welcome to Jessie Jukes and Jade Hall. Both girls are Year 3's and have come from Palmerston North schools.

Next Monday is Pet Day, and we have been busy over the past two days, working on our Applehead Dolls for this special day. Yesterday we peeled and carved faces into apples. Miss Jeynes took the apples home and they are slowly shrivelling up in her oven. (They will look like wrinkled faces in a few days!).

Today we were busy cutting, cellotaping and glueing material onto recycled plastic bottles to create the bodies for our Appleheads. Here are some of us busy at work ...

This is our lovely smiley Jade. Great to have you in Room 3!

Happy Holidays!

The day has arrived! It's the end of term. Today is a bit sad because it is Anthony's last day. We hope you enjoy Parklands School in Palmerston North, Anth.

Have a great holiday everyone!
Keep reading! Get 'lost in a book'!
Keep practising your timestables/division facts!

See you next term

Buddy Class Trust Walk

Today we joined with Room 6 (our buddy class). They had a fantastic activity lined up for us ... a trust walk!!!
We buddied up with a Room 6 kid, and were blindfolded (with a rugby sock). Our buddy carefully led us over, under, through, around an obstacle course that they'd set up during lunch time.

It was a little bit scary at the start, but our confidence grew as we were led around.
Then after it was over, WE got to lead our buddy!

Milk in Schools

Today was our first day of getting milk at school. Mrs Simpson came into our class and played a DVD that explained why milk is so good for us, and also it explained how to pack down the carton when we've finished, to get it ready for recycling.

We really enjoyed our milk and are looking forward to gulping down some more tomorrow!

Daffodil Day

Today is Daffodil Day! It was great to see how so many children got into the spirit of the day by dressing up in yellow, and donating money for the Cancer Society.

Some of Room 3 children dressed in yellow rubbish bags, or wore yellow pegs. One clever boy even tied yellow teddies around his tummy! (Good on you Tommy)

Here are some photos of our parade ...

School Disco

We had our school disco last Friday night. What a spectacular night! (and a great way to calm our nerves after the earthquake).

Here are some photos of the Junior disco ...

A HUGE thank you to the Student Council for organising and running the disco. You did a brilliant job. We had so much fun.

MATHS WEEK FUN

This week is MATHS WEEK. Room 3 have enjoyed learning new games that challenge us. We've learnt games that require strategic thinking and we've enjoyed the challenge of taking a game and changing it to make it more challenging.

Yesterday we went on a MATHS TRAIL around the school. We were in small teams, and had to find answers to maths problems. One of the tasks was to find as many different shapes as we could on the playground.  How many different shapes can you see in this photo?

We had to solve real life problems that involved adding, subtracting, and multiplying. We also had fun challenges like .... how many jumps to get across the netball court????

We taught the Room 2 children a fun adding/subtracting game called 'First to 15". Ask us how to play it if you want to learn...

The Big Sad Wolf Show

We were all treated with a special show today called The Big Sad Wolf.
It was a very funny show about a poor, misunderstood vegetarian wolf, who is blamed for eating sheep. But eventually the real culprit gets found out.

Here are some pictures ...

What a fantastic show. It was great to hear so many children laughing together.
